hello! i heard from a friend that there's a comic surrounding kung-fu from hausu that was released before the movie but it's extremely hard to find. i figure if anyone knew about it, it would be you guys!
I have heard this too — it is mentioned in the documentary about the film included on the Criterion DVD.
I don’t know any more details than that yet — but let’s all start looking! SAME HAT crew, send in details you find and I’ll post it all up!
Was just watching "The Horror of Malformed Men" last night and it slowly dawned on me that the middle portion of that film is totally adapted from the same source material as "The Strange Tale of Panorama Island". It also struck me that many aspects of the film itself seemed like they could have come out of a Maruo manga: eye patch disguises, gothic tableaus where mostly naked women mingle with creepy crawlies, and his trademark baleful gazes. Is Teruo Ishii's work a known influence on Maruo?
Close, I would actually say that they are both simply influenced by Edogawa Rampo and Yumeno Kyusaku — and spring from a similar well of grotesque 1920s art and culture!
