SIGNAL BOOST!  THIS STUFF SUCKS

high-tech-low-fashion:

ok so i feel a strong need to talk about this because it bothered me in april & i’m still feelin’ salty about it (also i care about defending kazuo umezuo’s art more than an imo overrated streetwear brand). mishka previewed this 2nd version of the “dark myths” jersey (3rd pic) earlier today and i can’t help but be annoyed by their attempt to pretend like they’re not blatantly ripping off kazuo umezu illustrations by  redrawing them (badly)????  ???? clearly mishka HQ was like “yoOO bruhuhuh u think someone might notice we cut & pasted this d0pe-ass anime shyT into our design without giving any s/o to the og artist dude or whatever??? ayyy lmao let’s get that intern down in graphics to pencil up a a new version! our target market will buy fucking anything!! #DOPE #WEED #SS14 #420 #FASHION #OCCULT #DEATHNSTUFF”

from april when i was talking about this the first time:

"I’m v curious about copyright issues regarding using Umezu’s graphics, like can anyone just cut & paste & “borrow” art from manga to use on a product they sell? or is it a simple matter of yea it’s ok if nobody reports you to whatever authority would care? how do things like this work, I must know"

(comment on a reblog)”Yeah I’m also curious and rubbed the wrong way by this because the description is just “SCARED MANGA GIRL” and I feel like if Mishka knew they had an opportunity to drop a name they definitely would, ugh. Idk I have heard some fishy things about how they do business and I’m kinda leaning towards “I found this on the internet and now it’s mine lol”

also aeon-fux commented this when she reblogged the 4th photo (Japanese Poster: Umezu Horror Theater. Kazuo Umezu. 2005.)

"yeah so like Mishka never got back to me about the above image being free use/if they got the ok from Kazuo Umezu lmao that’s the shit I don’t like"

i know i’m digging hella deep into this, but i think it’s because umezu’s work is very special to me and i feel like mishka is cheapening/disrespecting it by using it in this design without any kind of credit given whatsoever. at least like #kazuoumezo or some shit, don’t just try and pass it off as an original graphic when you know it’s not.

p.s. also srry but using arabic letters is tragically old hat & forever traps your graphic/garment into a specific time period, i.e. 2012.

This is about my experience attending a gallery opening focused on comic art. Warning, it’s pretty intense. I haven’t written anything while this pissed off in a long long longgggg while, and I’m a bit frightened I’m going to wake up to some death threats or something similar. But, well, I also think it’s important. Read on if interested.

saturniatellus said: Hi, some time ago I saw an illustration (I suppose from Garo) I don't remember where, depicting in the same space the horse from Picasso's Guernica and a strange bird from a Max Ernst picture, do you know where can I find it? I really appreciate any help you can provide. :))

Does this ring any bells for anyone? I can picture the two elements but don’t think I’ve seen this specific illustration?

Yep! That’s the list of all the scanlations that Evan and I did:

Not included in the list are our two books with Last Gasp, TOKYO ZOMBIE by Yusaku Hanakuma, and THE STRANGE TALE OF PANORAMA ISLAND by Suehiro Maruo!

I had the pleasure of hosting an Inkstuds interview with Junko Mizuno at my apartment this weekend — podcast host Robin McConnell is traveling the West Coast on tour, interviewing cartoonists for future episodes of the show.
Pictured here: comics sweetheart Brandon Graham talking to the delightful Junko Mizuno!  It was really fun to host and participate in the interview with Junko about her long career as a cartoonist and artist.
