New animation by Same Hat friend and cartoonist / OAV encylopedia Dash Shaw, along with a screening of “Bobby’s Girl” (ボビーに首ったけ), a delightful and beautiful anime from 1985. Followed by a Q&A with Dash.

With books like Bottomless Belly Button, BodyWorld, and his latest, New School, the young cartoonist Dash Shaw is responsible for some of the most adventurous and idiosyncratic comics being made today. His dynamic serial forms feature elaborately layered panels and off-kilter figuration, betraying a remarkable confluence of styles and strategies, at times recalling everything from Sigmar Polke to manga. Recently, in anticipation of a feature-length project, he has also begun to produce a similarly variegated body of animation, which includes music video, the melancholy droid-drama The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century, A.D., and a biography that covers a chapter in the life of Dada doyenne Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. He’s also crafted cinematic permutations of his own comics, as well as adaptations of game shows and reality tv that marry their source materials’ original audio tracks with a series of static illustrations to uncanny effect—Wheel of Fortune never seemed so heartbreaking, or so strange. Tonight, he’ll present a selection of his experiments with moving images at Light Industry. Rounding out the lineup is a film chosen by Shaw that he finds resonant with the concerns of his particular hand-drawn animation techniques: Bobby’s Girl, an 80s anime rarity about a teenage biker, his pen pal, and his death drive.

Followed by a conversation with Shaw.

Nobuhiko Obayashi, director of Hausu, directed a film version of mangaka Kazuo Umezu’s The Drifting Classroom. It was not given a wide release even in Japan, and not released on DVD, but right now they’re doing a bunch of screenings of Obayashi-san’s work down at Cinefamily in LA, and he was there for some Q&A!

I WANT OBAYASHI HERE. I’m beginning the process of AT LEAST getting a screening of The Drifting Classroom somewhere between here and Seattle, if not seeing about getting Obayashi-san at one of the screenings! I NEED HELP. Please keep an eye out for updates, if you’re interested in seeing this I’ll need to rally some people to fill up some seats!! It’s really important to me that I see this film. I’ve been really down lately and motivations outside of school have been non-existent, but the existence of The Drifting Classroom film has given me a spark that only my love of horror surrealism can bring! Collecting little plastic figurines were all the rage in the mid 1980’s and early 90’s. M.U.S.C.L.E. and Monster in My Pocket are the most well known worldwide and still fondly remembered today.

Anyone with a little more knowledge in the collectible toy market knows that M.U.S.C.L.E. was actually an import from Japan based on the popular Shonen Jump wrestling series Kinnikuman.

The vast amount of characters with all kinds of crazy designs gave Bandai the ability to churn out dozens upon dozens of small plastic single colored figurines that kids could knock and fling around without worrying too much about breaking them. Their size also meant you didn’t have to worry much about running out of space to display and store them.

GeGeGe no Kitaro being as popular as ever in Japan during the 1980’s got its own line as well. Unfortunately for Bandai it was never imported to other countries like Kinnikuman was… at least not officially.

In come the “Lucky Yuckies” which were released everywhere else. These bootleg versions of Kitaro and friends hit the market but failed to really catch on. Kitaro is now called Shorty, Neko Musume is called Beth, and Nezumi-Otoko now looks like an actual rat. Their descriptions are incredibly silly and nonsensical, well even more now that it has nothing to do with the actual Yokai in question. I have no idea what all this “Wishing” stuff is about either. Its like the whole book got ran through an online translator or something.

Minifigures XD has plenty of photos of the various non bootleg Kitaro toys along with a bunch of other toy lines.
